BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- You may want to think twice about locking your valuables in your car during this holiday season.

A report says that car thefts spike during the holidays. Black Friday is among the highest holidays for car thefts and burglaries from cars. Last year they were 2,262 reported car thefts on Black Friday nationwide.

Police here in Maine are also warning people to be vigilant while holiday shopping. The Bangor Maine Police Department posted on Facebook urging folks to protect your car and shopping items from thieves.

"We always encourage people to make sure they doors are locked," Sergeant Wade Betters said.

Police also encourage people to hide valuable items from plain view, and to put shopping items into the trunk before driving to other stores.
