Portland (NEWS CENTER) -- Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling says he and councilor Nick Mavodones hashed out the details of the plan to send two questions to voters in November over hot chocolate.
They announced the plan on Friday to ask voters if they want to spend $64 million dollars to renovate four schools, or spend $32-million to renovate two schools now and the others possibly with state funding later.
In an interview Monday morning with News Center, the mayor said he and Mavodones are on opposing sides of the issue, but agree voters need to have a say.
"I bought councilor Mavodones a lot of cups of hot chocolate. We went to a couple of undisclosed coffee shops downtown," Mayor Strimling says. "We just sat down and talked. No one wanted nothing on the ballot, that was clear."
Strimling supports the $64 million dollar plan.
When it comes to two questions on the same issue on the same ballot, City Spokesperson Jessica Grondin says she's not aware of this ever happening in the city before.
