Great stories from the greatest generation

(NEWS CENTER Maine) — Some of the best stories are told by the people who have lived the longest.

In a NEWS CENTER Now special series of reports, we will feature some 'Great stories told by the greatest generation.' People who served our country, those who grew up together and are still spending time together 70 years after high school, a woman who taught music for almost 40 years and someone who gave her life to the church nearly 60 years ago; all stories of Mainers going back multiple decades.

"My mother made our clothes with an old foot-treadle Singer sewing machine, and we had to walk to school. Back home for lunch, back to school and then walk home after school, no school buses. In the summer we would kick our shoes off and go barefoot as we walked around the rocks and the water and the grass. Our feet would get tough as nails, but every night before bed we had to scrub our feet," says Howell McClure, one of the people who will be featured in our series.

Mary Lou Martindell: (99)

"Am I excited about being 100? Ya- But I don't think I am going to last a lot longer I don't want to last a lot longer... I am not afraid of dying, in fact, I am looking forward to it."

Sister Anne Fitzpatrick: (76)

"One day I was arguing with the Lord about why I would be a great mom and then it hit me, the very qualities that would make me a good mother would make for a great sister of Mercy."

Les Brewer: (95)

"I have a tee shirt that says are you smiling? And it says this is when you are at your best no matter what the problem or situation you are in if you can bring some humor in...."

"It's made it very easy really.. I am amazed at how easy it's been. I didn't anticipate that it would be that way moving from your home that you've lived in for a long time, but all of these people have made it home" said Dodge.
