(NEWS CENTER)-- Simon Williams was a baseball standout. He starred at Portland High School, then at U-Maine and then with the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
Once he stopped playing baseball, Williams joined the peace corps and spent a few years in the Ukraine. He became involved in education and even though he was teaching, he was learning as well.
"The school was the heart of the community. It's where people connected. The big kids connected with the little kids. The grandmas connected with the lunch ladies. School events were attended by all, and said this is how school should be" said Williams.
Simon started a program called 'School Square' which pairs teachers in need of classroom help with volunteers willing to chip in. He is currently trying to raise money to fund this effort. Click on the link to learn more about the program and about how you can help.
