Mother, stepfather plead not guilty to murder of 10-year-old girl

The mother and stepfather accused of beating their 10-year-old daughter, Marissa Kennedy, are scheduled to be back in court Monday.

BELFAST (NEWS CENTER Maine) — The mother and stepfather of Marissa Kennedy, the 10-year-old girl beaten to death in her Stockton Springs home, have pleaded not guilty to murder.

Sharon Carillo, the mother, and her husband Julio Carillo, were indicted by the grand jury for depraved indifference murder. Their arraignment took place Monday afternoon in Waldo County Superior Court.

Julio Carrillo’s new lawyer, Derrick Banda, told reporters after the brief hearing that there are many details of the case that have not been made public yet, and said reporters should be ready for some "real surprises."

Attorney Chris MacLean, representing Sharon Carillo, said he continues to press the court to remove the two state prosecutors from the case. MacLean said the state attorney general’s prosecutors illegally obtained evidence from a school Sharon Carillo had attended in New York, including records about her mental or emotional health.

Last week, the judge ordered that information to be thrown out.

MacLean said the prosecutors had already seen the information and therefore should be removed from the case. He said a hearing on that issue could happen next week.

Both Carrillo’s are being held in the Two Bridges Regional Jail. Actual murder trials, if they occur, would not take place for 6 months.
