BROWNFIELD, Maine – Police say a man choked a woman and used a propane tank to break into her home on Friday.

59-year-old Joseph Maggs, a transient who had been staying at the victim’s house on Merrill Corner road in Brownfield, choked her during a violent rage, according to police.

After interviewing witnesses, Trooper Jason Win learned that Baggs used a propane tank to break through the windows of the victim's home after she had closed her door when he left.

Tpr. Wing said Maggs was arrested and taken to the Oxford County Jail where he was charged with assault, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and violating conditions of release.

Maggs had bail conditions from a recent arrest where he reportedly kicked a Fryeburg Police Officer and a corrections officer. Charges have been upgraded to felony assault, due to multiple prior convictions in nine different states including assault with the intent to murder.
