Linda Bradford of Orono has served as a volunteer tutor with Literacy Volunteers of Bangor for 12 years, helping adults who lack basic reading skills as well as adults who are learning English as another language.

During that time, Linda has worked individually with more than two dozen students, led English conversation groups for non-English speakers, and served three years on the LVB Board of Directors. In 2013, Linda received the Non-traditional Student Community Award from the University of Maine, recognizing her as a student who also volunteers to serve and benefit others. In 2014, the award was renamed in her honor as the Linda Bradford Award for Campus and Community Service.

Linda has tutored many students from Middle Eastern countries. She makes these students and their families part her life, even providing them with hand-knitted hats, mittens, and scarves to help them “survive” their first Maine winter.

University of Maine Dean of Students Robert Dana said, “Linda is a genuine, personable, caring person who puts others ahead of herself as a way of living and being. She lives what she believes.”
