Car crash kills guest worker in Kittery

Police identified the victim of a fatal crash in Kittery as a 23-year-old male of Serbian descent who came to Maine on a work visa

KITTERY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The victim of a fatal car crash in Kittery was identified by police as a guest worker from abroad.

The car crashed around 1 a.m. on Saturday along Dennett Rd. Police said the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt ran into a tree, leaving the driver trapped and suffering from severe head trauma.

When emergency crews arrived, police said they found the driver unbuckled from his seat belt. However police said it was unclear if he had been buckled earlier, or if the seat belt was released by good Samaritans in their efforts to free him.

The driver was loaded into a helicopter and flown to Maine Medical Center. Police said he was pronounced dead at the hospital a few hours later.

Police identified the driver as a 23-year-old man of Serbian descent and traced his address to Macedonia, but determined he had come to Maine on a work visa for a job on the seacoast.

Police contacted his visa sponsor, and they are working together to notify his family.

Kittery Police received help reconstructing the crash from York Police and Maine State Police. Also assisting in the investigation is the State Medical Examiner's Office which has been tasked with performing an autopsy.
