BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — An audience of Maine business leaders and others is gathered in Biddeford to hear Senator Susan Collins and Ivanka Trump talk tax reform.
They have been invited to the event by Sen. Collins, as Republicans in Congress continues to develop plans for a major tax reform package. That plan is already prompting harsh criticism from Democrats , who say it will cost middle income families more money.
Republicans say the opposite, that middle income families will save money under the plan.
The plan is still evolving in the Senate. A spokeswoman for Collins says the Senator favors income tax reform and relief, but is not yet ready to support the Senate proposal.
Friday's event with Ivanka Trump was organized quickly, according to Collins office. Audience members were notified earlier this week. An executive at Volk Packaging in Biddeford, where the event is being held, said they were contacted Tuesday to host the event.
Senator Collins has opposed a number of the policies and statements from President Trump , and has often been critical of the President. However, a Collins staff member said Collins and Ivanka Trump have met with each other several times before on other issues.
