HOLDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — This week's Maine Education Association Inspiring Educator is Donna Oliver, a fourth-grade teacher at Holden Elementary School. Oliver brings her passion for helping the community into her classroom.
Oliver and her students work with "Project Linus," an organization that donates blankets and quilts to sick children in hospitals. The students are making their own quilts to be donated. It is a way to incorporate things like math and writing into a valuable lesson.
"Its another way for us to help them to be compassionate," Oliver said. "They always want to keep the quilt, but when we explain that someone sick needs it, they go 'oh ok they need it more than me' and they pass it on to the hospital".
The children will have their quilts on display at the end of the month before they are donated to local hospitals.
