Imperiled hometown grocery store averts closure

The Yellowfront Grocery in Damariscotta has been purchased by a local couple who plan to keep it going

DAMARISCOTTA (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- One of Damariscotta's oldest local businesses has been saved. The Yellowfront Grocery, which began business more than 95 years ago, has been purchased by a local couple who plan to keep it going.

The small grocery store, still owned by the family that started it, had run into financial problems and was in danger of closing a month ago. The store has been popular, especially with older residents, but was facing rising costs and more competition.

Jane and Gary Gravel, who own several other small businesses, say they have arranged to buy the Yellowfront and maintain the business. They say there will be some changes, including the name which will become Main Street Grocery.

Gary Gravel says the change of ownership will become official next week.
