Fire blackens upper unit of South Portland apartment complex

The fire at Liberty Commons apartments in South Portland started outside and climbed into the attic, according to firefighters

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Despite the grim scene with its billowing smoke and charred siding, firefighters said no one was hurt in a fire at a South Portland apartment complex.

The fire broke out before noon on Wednesday at Liberty Commons on Westbrook Street. The South Portland fire chief said the fire started outside the building, climbed up the wall and got into the attic.

Significant damage was clearly visible to the upper story unit where firefighters were focusing their efforts with lesser damage to surrounding unit.
