WILTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --
Deb Roberts, mother of El Faro crew member Michael Holland, will be recognized this weekend with a national award for her work to benefit the maritime industry.
Her son was one of 33 crew members on board El Faro, which sunk in October 2015 during its voyage from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan Puerto Rico when it lost propulsion in Hurricane Joaquin.
Since then, Roberts has dedicated much of her life to remembering her son and making his legacy felt in ways that benefit the maritime industry.
This weekend, Roberts told NEWS CENTER she will travel to New York City to receive the Admiral of the Ocean Sea Mariner's Rosette from the United Seamen's Service. The Honored Seafarer's awards are presented each year.
Roberts is receiving her award for creating a scholarship fund to benefit young men and women pursuing careers at sea through Maine Maritime Academy and for her work with the Maine Legislature to extend tax credits to mariners living in the state.
Roberts called the award "exciting news."
