Another Nor'easter? More reason to embrace Maine's storm namesakes

By the looks of our social media feeds, your reactions are mixed regarding this March nor'easter. A message for those who say, 'not another one!' one way to cope, is to embrace it. In fact, there's one community that cheers on a good nor'easter, year-round.

(NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The University of New England in Biddeford is home to a mascot like no other. UNE Athletic Director, Curt Smyth, says nor'easters are fierce. "Having a mascot that is able to symbolize that is important to us.”

Smyth says the school almost rebranded roughly eight years ago, but the campus voted overwhelmingly to keep it and the mascot: Stormin' Norman.

Jordan Early, a UNE student-athlete says she's a proud nor'easter. Mitchel Mulin, another student-athlete, says there's an energy on campus when a storm like this is in the forecast.

"Everybody on campus gets a little more excited about being a team being known as a nor’easter and being known as like a powerful symbol of, you know, destruction.”

As the snow storm barreled our way, the NEWS CENTER Now team continued a namesake trip from UNE to the Snow Squall in South Portland. Just as the flakes started to fall, it was time to learn the recipe for a nor'easter cocktail.

► Nor'easter cocktail recipe

  • Combine 1/2 ounce of maple syrup
  • with 1/2 ounce lime juice
  • and 2 ounces of bourbon, over ice
  • top it with ginger beer and garnish with a lime

Meanwhile, the name of the business is not what you may think. A bartender tells NEWS CENTER Maine, it’s named after an old clipper ship that was called the snow squall, but a lot of people associate it with the wintry weather.

On the clock, the NEWS CENTER Now team couldn't sample the nor'easter, so a blizzard from Dairy Queen would suffice.
