BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- If you want to avoid the lines on Election Day, you'll need to act today. Today is the last day to vote in person before the election. In Bangor, you can stop by the Cross Insurance Center.
It's also the last day you can request an absentee ballot in the state. The idea behind this deadline is to help the city and town clerks all across the state from getting overwhelmed by a large amount of ballots.
A lot of Mainers decided they didn't want to wait until Election Day to cast their ballot. About 20% of registered voters in the state have already voted.
The Secretary of State's Office said more than 220,000 absentee ballots went out so far this year. About 172,000 of them have been cast. Again, today is the last day to request ballots.
If you already have one you can vote anytime between now until 8 p.m. on election night. Early voting in Bangor runs from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday at the Cross Insurance Center.
Check with your city clerk's office to find out about voting where you live.
