Bob Ryan was a sophomore in High School when the attack on Pearl Harbor took place. Even as a young man, he was moved with conviction. When he graduated, and with written permission from his father, he enlisted and joined the invasion at Normandy.

He was a lot younger than the rest of his company, but Bob remembers arriving at the beach around 2pm. The intensity of the fighting had calmed but mortar rounds still hit the beach as Bob and his company arrived. He was part of the SeaBees, an amphibious Naval unit that brought soldiers and supplies to the front lines.
