Volunteer recognized for his service with Scarborough PD

Edward Libby received the Senior Service Award from Scarborough Terrace for his 12 years of volunteering with the Volunteers in Police Service.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A volunteer at the Scarborough Police Department was recognized for his 12 years of service.

Edward Libby helped start the Volunteers In Police Service (VIPS) group at the Scarborough Police Department in 2005. Its 11 members can be seen around their community helping to enforce driving safety, obeying cross walks and handicapped parking signs. Libby has spent the last two months enforcing new student drop off rules at the Wentworth School in Scarborough. Just one of the many jobs he's taken on in 12 years.

"I picked up the Forecaster and saw that Chief Molten was going to be implement the program at Scarborough Police Department and the minute that I read it I said I want to do this," said Libby.

Scarborough Terrace awarded Libby with its Senior Service Award. The first award the 75-year-old has received since he started giving back to his community through VIPS.

"It's a great program and I know they have a lot of fun doing what they do," said Elizabeth Simonds, Scarborough Terrace marketing director. "Giving back to the community is what it's all about."

Though it was an award that gave Libby the feeling of accomplishment, good volunteers never lend a hand for recognition. It's the work itself that really matters. Specifically in this VIPS case, making sure students get to class safely.

"I enjoy it all. I loved getting up at four o'clock this morning, so I can be here," said Libby. "I just love doing it."
