Portland Press Herald Hero Imagery

Hero imagery of Portland Press Herald.

Every year the staff photographers at the Portland Press Herald shoot thousands and thousands of pictures, on land, sea and air, from Kittery to Fort Kent, Bethel to Lubec. A mere fraction actually make it into the newspaper or onto the website. An even tinier sliver make the cut when the Press Herald is putting together its best photos of the year.

Chief photographer Greg Rec and staff photographer Ben McCanna joined us to talk about how and where the best photos were taken. One image shows a soccer player dramatically lit against a backdrop of falling raindrops. To Ben, it showed the importance in sports photography of capturing the moment. Another picture shows the emotions of a man in court, listening to proceedings that may decide if he’ll spend the rest of life in prison.

We live in a world awash in video. The Wall Street Journal reports that 400 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute, a year’s worth of video every day. Yet there is still enormous power in a compelling photo, a moment captured in time. The Portland Public Library is displaying the Press Herald’s best photos of the year through February. If you can, go see them. By the time you get home there will be thousands of hours of new video on YouTube.
