Gingerbread house contest draws 100 bakers

Around 100 bakers participated in the 27th annual Gingerbread House Contest in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

PORTSMOUTH, New Hampshire (NEWS CENTER) -- For the month of December you can take a tour of around 100 houses in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in less than an hour. Gingerbread houses, that is.

The houses are on display at the Discover Portsmouth building as part of the 27th Annual Gingerbread House Contest and Exhibition. A committee of five, lead by contest coordinator Robin Albert, had the task of setting up the houses. They were efficient and careful not to demolish the 100% edible houses.

"Has to be on a fifteen by fifteen platform and everything has to be edible," said Albert. "Even what you glue it together with has to be edible."

It's not easy to create a gingerbread house and Kait Smith can attest to it. She participated in the contest for the third time, building a replica of the Portsmouth Music Hall's new marquee. The process took a lot of re-thinking and re-building.

"You have to be open to pivoting," said Smith. "Like I'm always changing my mind, or changing up candy, or ordering new fondant, or sugar paper in different colors."

The judges of the Gingerbread House Contest awarded Bobby Menard, who built The Moffatt Ladd House, with first place. All of the gingerbread houses are on display at Discover Portsmouth for the public to visit, free of charge, until December 23rd.
