VASSALBORO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — State police say one man is dead and a woman is being hospitalized after a police-involved shooting in Vassalboro.
State police said they were responding to a burglary that took place in the area just before they received a call about a suspicious vehicle.
Officers encountered that vehicle on Arnold Road.
State police said the driver of that vehicle intentionally rammed the Maine state police cruiser and officers then fired upon that vehicle.
One man was pronounced dead on the scene and the woman passenger was injured and transported by helicopter to the Maine Medical Center in Portland. She is in critical condition with a gunshot wound.
Neither of their names have been released at this time, but state police say they will be working through the night to provide more answers.
“Notification and next of kin will be more forthcoming in the morning. We certainly want to make sure what we provide you is factual,” said Lt. Col. John Cote. “So we’ll give a limited release this evening and do our best to give you an update in the morning.”
Following normal protocol, the three officers directly involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. The attorney general is now leading the investigation.
