PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Thursday is National Get Smart About Credit Day. Credit can impact a lot of areas of your life, from applying for loans, to getting insurance. Here are some tips from the Evergreen Credit Union's CEO and President, Tim Verreault.
1. Get a copy of your credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com.
Dispute any errors you might see and get in touch with creditors EARLY when difficulties first begin to surface.
2. Pay of CURRENT debts.
You'll want to take care of any past due balances, but don't open a new card or cancel any existing card.
3. Be patient, but vigilant.
Seek professional help if you're overwhelmed, such as Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS), but overall, changes take time and need to be monitored.
