(USA TODAY) — The New England Patriots are bringing back a familiar figure for the stretch run.
The team claimed tight end Martellus Bennett off waivers Thursday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Bennett was waived by the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday with a failure to disclose a medical condition designation. He announced during the Packers' bye week that he was "pretty sure" this would be his final season and he has not played since as he battles a shoulder injury.
Bennett was a key figure in the Patriots' Super Bowl-winning season in 2016, as he ranked second on the team in receiving yards (701) and first in touchdown catches (seven). He has 24 catches for 233 yards so far this season.
The Patriots face the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
