BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- .President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has sparked more controversy in the Middle East.
In Maine the response to the announcement, which goes against decades of U.S. policy, varies.
Bob Schaible, Director of Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights, called Trump's move "unintelligent" but "useful" for Palestinians. He believes it will increase sympathy for the Palestinian cause.
"This move by Trump puts the world's eyes on the Palestinians and that struggle. Donald Trump is a very unpopular world leader so this decision further isolates Israel with the United States," Schaible said.
However, Rabbi Bill Siemers, of Bangor, downplayed the impact the decision will have.
"The reality is that Jerusalem has always been Israel's capital. Since the founding of the government that's where this government has been," Siemers said.
